What Is the FTCE Test?

The Florida Teacher Certification Exam, or FTCE, is taken by anyone who desires to teach in the K-12 system in Florida, including those who want to teach pre-school. To ensure teacher competency and effectiveness, the Bureau of Educator Certification tests and certifies all prospective teachers. So, if one is thinking of educating Florida's youth, one will need to prepare to take the FTCE test. Passing the FTCE certifies one to teach throughout the state of Florida.

FTCE Exam Structure

The FTCE consists of three basic tests, which are all computer-based. The FTCE General Knowledge Test (GK) examines one's basic skills within four subtests: Essay, English Language Skills (ELS), Reading, and Mathematics. The second test is the FTCE Professional Education Test (PEd), which tests candidate's understanding of professional practices and pedagogical (teaching) skills. The third type of test is the FTCE Subject Area Exam (SAE). Depending on what grades and subjects one plans to teach, one will also need to take at least one of the 39 different SAEs, ranging from agriculture to foreign languages, teaching visually impaired students, and dozens of other teaching specialties.

FTCE Test Questions

The FTCE General Knowledge Test portion of the FTCE provides a choice of prompts for the test-taker to write one essay within a 50-minute timeframe. The test-taker has 40 minutes to answer 40 multiple-choice questions on the ELS subtest, 55 minutes for about 40 questions in the reading subtest, and 1 hour and 40 minutes for the approximate 40 mathematics questions. Each FTCE multiple-choice question has four answer options, and some may contain a passage or graphic. For the PEd portion of the FTCE, the test-taker has 2 hours and 30 minutes to answer about 100 multiple-choice questions. Additionally, some test questions, known as performance assessment components, require written responses. Some SAE tests, such as French, German, and Spanish, require the test-taker to do specific speaking tasks in the relevant language.

FTCE Test Prep

Test-takers should begin taking FTCE practice tests right away. (More information on these will follow.) Practice test results can be combined with the PQ4R method, which is recommended by the FTCE administrators to prepare for the exam. This strategy involves previewing, questioning, reading, reflecting, reciting, and reviewing. In the question portion, valuable things to ask are:

1) What material is on the test?

2) How much of this material do I already know?

3) What content do I still need to learn?

The answer key provides correlations between test questions and their associated competency. This can help to classify one's grasp of the material as either knowledgeable, unfamiliar, or unsure.

4) How do I need to prepare for the FTCE test?

Using the information from the answers to these first three questions, draft a study schedule and a study plan. Review the state regulations, publication for organizations in your discipline, curricular materials, your class notes, textbooks, etc.

Florida Teacher Test Study Guides

As already mentioned, reviewing results from FTCE practice tests is a crucial step for improving preparedness for the exam. Equipped with practice test results and using the PQ4R study strategy, test-takers can then use numerous resources to continue FTCE preparation, including study guides. These study guides might be found online or in bookstores. Study guides should list the particular competencies, skills, knowledge, and grasp of professional principles that the exams cover. All of these study guides can be instrumental in the reading, reflecting, reciting, and reviewing portions of the PQ4R study strategy.

FTCE Practice Tests

FTCE practice tests are truly the foundation of preparation for the exams, and they are free! There are dozens of FTCE practice tests, each with practice questions that familiarize test-takers with the FTCE format and types of questions on the exam. As previously mentioned, the info learned from these practice tests dovetails with the PQ4R study strategy, especially the questioning portion. One can use these combined resources to improve one's mastery in areas targeted for improvement. When answering the FTCE multiple-choice practice questions, as in the actual exam, be sure to read all four answer options provided before selecting one. Practice, practice, practice! Practice tests may not make one perfect, but they may make one proficient and ready to teach.

FTCE Test Scoring Process

Test-takers must pass all four of the GK subtests. Passing the 12-point GK Essay subtest requires a minimum of 8 points. The essay will be scored on its effectiveness, as determined by its demonstration of content mastery and composition skills. These include not just writing mechanics, but logical argumentation, the degree of support one provides for one's thesis, and expressive skills, such as the effective organization of ideas and details, professional diction, sentence structure, varied sentence patterns, and more. The FTCE passing score for the ELS, Reading, and Mathematics subtests is a minimum scaled score of 200 each. Likewise, one needs a minimum scaled score of 200 to pass the PEd test, and the same is true for the SAE multiple-choice and composite tests. French, German, and Spanish SAEs have additional requirements. In the English 6-12 and the Middle Grades English 5-9 SAEs, the written performance section, like the GK essay, requires 8 out of 12 to pass.

• The most effective way to study for the FTCE is by taking practice tests, using the PQ4R study method. Use the practice test scores to determine what you need to study, then use study guides for the FTCE.

• Most of the FTCE tests require a minimum (scaled) score of 200. The General Knowledge Essay requires 8 out of 12 points.

• After you submit your application for certification to the Bureau of Educator Certification (BEC) the Bureau will determine which tests you should take.
